Judith Thompson, MD is a general surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the breast. She has been
serving the New Braunfels community since 1996. Dr Thompson is a graduate of Texas A&M University (BS Biochemistry) and
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (Doctor of Medicine). She completed 6 years of surgical training and
research at East Tennessee State University. In 1987 she was the recipient of the Outstanding Young Women in America award for
founding and her work with a program for medical students to address the needs of the less fortunate of San Antonio.
Since 1997, Dr. Thompson has worked closely with a state of the art department of radiology, a sub-specialty trained breast
pathologist, and with local and regional medical and radiation oncologists. Dr. Thompson maintains her certification and skills in
general surgery. She provides diagnostic upper and lower endoscopies, hernia repair, gallbladder removal, intestinal and skin
surgery. If there is need for a procedure outside of her comfort or skill range, then she has a well established referral network to
rely upon.
Dr. Thompson provides evaluation, diagnosis and management of benign and malignant diseases of the breast. She is a participant
in The American College of Surgeon's Mastery of Breast Surgery program, a voluntary quality improvement initiative, and is
working toward completing the requirements for NAPBC accreditation. She performs breast conservation, traditional mastectomy,
skin sparing and nipple preserving mastectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy and works together with reconstructive surgeons. She
has certified in-office breast ultrasonography and performs evaluation and management of breast cysts, benign nodules, and FNA
and core biopsies of suspicious lesions. She performs a breast cancer risk assessment for each individual, offers chemoprevention
therapy for those at high risk, can perform genetic screening, provides surveillance, and ongoing care for those at high risk as well
as breast cancer patients.
Dr. Thompson is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a member of the American College of Surgeons and American
Society of Breast Surgeons. She is described as an advocate for patients, physicians, and others involved in healthcare delivery. Dr.
Thompson is a founding member of United Physicians and Surgeons of America, a director and sponsor of Summit at the Summit:
A National Grand Rounds on the State of Medicine in America, and is a founder and board member of the Let My Doctor Practice
movement; a movement to restore and preserve the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship.
Dr. Thompson’s priority, is to care for her patients with honesty, simplicity, and integrity. She is committed to quality personalized
care with which she defines her patients’ circumstances, explains options, then works to see her patients through a care plan that
is effective and suitable for each.
