With his lifelong interest in technology, it was natural for Michael Shumski, MD to start his postsecondary education
by earning a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. After working with
medical robotics during his undergraduate studies, he went on to complete a master’s degree in mechanical
engineering, also at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Shumski then earned his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania School of
Medicine, and completed his residency training in ophthalmology at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta.
While at Emory, Dr. Shumski collaborated with a design team from Georgia Tech to design an award-winning new
device that aids in the crucial “capsulotomy” step in cataract surgery.
Dr. Shumski is an advocate of continuing education and using the most advanced and proven technology to provide
patients with unparalleled laser vision correction. Dr. Shumski is a Diplomate of the American Board of
Ophthalmology, and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Refractive Surgery Alliance, and the
American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Outside the office, Dr. Shumski enjoys sports and fitness, playing guitar and piano, and supporting the Orlando City
and Pride soccer teams.
