Sunny Sharma M.D., F.A.C.P., C.M.D. is an internal medicine physician in the Greater Chicagoland area. Dr. Sharma’s interest in

medicine peaked at a young age, as his sister enrolled in medical school while he was only 12 years old. When she returned home for

school breaks, he found himself fascinated by her textbooks. He loved how intricate the human body is, and how as a physician his

decisions can save someone’s life. Knowing that being a doctor is what he truly wanted, Dr. Sharma rushed through both high

school and undergrad in three years each in an attempt to start medical school as soon as possible.

During medical school, his mother became extremely ill and spent over six months in and out of the hospital. He witnessed

countless physicians and medical professionals conducting their work with trained accuracy, but often leaving my mother and the

rest of the family feeling helpless about the plan of care. This was the moment he decided that he had to become an internal

medicine physician that would openly communicate with patients and include them in their healing process, putting much time and

effort into the more difficult rotations, that involved travel throughout the country. Dr. Sharma specifically chose do his residency

training at West Suburban Medical Center, an underserved hospital located on the west side of Chicago because the program

provided more hands-on experience than traditional hospitals. Many medical mentors not only taught him about medicine on the

patient level, but also how physicians routine decisions impacted medicine on a global scale. This exposure to the broader stage of

medicine was eye-opening and paved the way for him to be the only resident to ever sit on multiple hospital committees. In Dr.

Sharma’s final year of residency, he received the first ever American College of Physicians Northern Illinois Internal Medici ne

Resident of the year. He parlayed his award with The American College of Physicians into an advocacy role, meeting with politicians

in Washington D.C., fighting for changes in healthcare. Dr. Sharma was a part of the ACP team that lobbied for the long-awaited

Medicare sustained growth rate repeal.

Following residency, Dr. Sharma returned to his roots, and began to work with a multispecialty group out of the same hospital in

which he was born. His goal was to view the field of medicine from every possible angle, watching the pieces work together,

ultimately impacting the entire medical system itself. Within his first year of practice, he worked his way to a physician advisor role,

and become a trusted voice of the length of stay committee and readmission review group. Dr. Sharma has become an active board

member with the Amita health Accountable Care Organization, the third most profitable ACO in the country. His early success has

led to being added to the Clinically Integrated Network Board and a medical director at multiple skilled nursing facilities.

Dr. Sharma’s outpatient practice is currently at a local Amita Health facility down the street from where he grew up. He prid es

himself in being able to live his childhood dream and give back to the community that raised him. As he continues to grow as a

physician and furthers his education, he is using his multiple administrative roles to help his medical group adapt and stay on the

cutting edge of the ever-evolving American Medical System.
