PHYSICIAN CEO 2022 Participant Directory
I would greatly like to have the opportunity to improve my knowledge in Kellogg for the cultural diversity of the
participants and to be able to live immersed in an innovative place, for the possibility of being with different people to
consolidate myself as a citizen of the world and a businessman motivated to change the Brazilian health system, to a model
based on value for the patient, using my project of expansion of my ophthalmology clinics.
My name is Ricardo Valente. I am an ophthalmologist specializing in anterior segment surgery, focusing on cataracts. I
have a strong purpose to deliver quality medicine focused on the experience of my patients - Value Based Health Care
(VBHC).
During my training, I participated in a large project of mass assistance in the needy communities of Rio de Janeiro, where I
made about 100 daily consultations on weekends and I was able to get to know very closely another reality of my People. I
also had the opportunity to work for the armed forces, in the aeronautics as a civilian ophthalmologist, being able to
experience the pros and cons of military habits.
Married since 2009, in 2012, with my first daughter, I started my MBA in health management at Fundação Getúlio Vargas
(FGV) in order to acquire knowledge to open my offices, which I started in 2012 with my current partner, the BARRA
VISION CENTER clinic; managing to complete my MBA in 2013, in addition to having the experience of the birth of my
second child.
In 2016, a friend invited me to be part of a group of doctors motivated to make a difference to medicine, running for the
direction of Unimed Rio, leader in the health insurance business in the State of RJ, with more than one million customers
and a revenue of 5 billion, but in serious financial and identity crisis.
We removed the board in June/2016 and by direct election (5000 cooperative physicians) we were elected and started to
preside over the carioca cooperative in August/16, where I was part of the Board of Directors in a delicate pre-bankruptcy
moment. However, we managed to get through the crisis and, despite all the difficulties, put the cooperative on the market
with good prospects.
At the end of 2017, I started my master's degree in management at ISCTE/IUL (Lisbon/Portugal) in order to improve
myself and achieve my goals. Completing the thesis at the end of 2019. In 2020 I begin the journey of the Physician CEO;
paralyzed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which we are currently resuming. Together with the entire clinic team, I achieved a
great victory, making us the first and only ONA accredited small ophthalmological clinic in RJ.
Not satisfied, I was selected with great honor for the first master's class of CBEXs/UNIALFA, which I am currently
studying and also for the intensive seminar at the HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL of VBHC, which I have just
