Gary Mendese, MD, FAAD, FACMS is a Boston-hospital trained dermatologist and Mohs surgeon. Dr.
Mendese is double board certified in Dermatology as well as Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery, and specializes
primarily in Mohs micrographic surgery. He sees patients in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Dr.
Mendese completed his dermatology training at the combined Boston University/Tufts University Dermatology
Residency Program, where he served as Chief Resident. He completed a rigorous American College of Mohs
Surgery (ACMS) fellowship in Mohs Surgery in 2012 under the leadership of Donald J. Grande, MD, who was a
recognized leader in the field. He completed a post-sophomore fellowship in pathology during medical school
from 2004-2005 and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society in his final year of medical school.
Currently, along with his daily practice duties, he is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Tufts
University School of Medicine. He also serves as Vice President on the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts
Academy of Dermatology (MAD) and sits on the Advisory Board for Impact Melanoma (formerly Melanoma
Foundation of New England). MAD represents dermatologists in Massachusetts regarding potential and
imminent changes in the healthcare as well as political landscape. The organization has played a significant role
in tanning bed legislation reform, as well as facilitating the prior authorization process patients encounter to
obtain essential medications. These, among many other accomplishments of the MAD have made their way up
to other New England states, including New Hampshire. Impact Melanoma is a global non-profit specializing in
the promotion of skin cancer awareness, its early detection, and the importance of increased funding for
treatment research.
Dr Mendese holds numerous accreditations and certifications including Fellow American College of Mohs
Surgery, Fellow, American Academy of Dermatology, Diplomate, American Board of Dermatology, Diplomate,
Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Massachusetts Academy of
Dermatology, and the New England Dermatological Society.
Dr. Mendese's clinical interests are skin cancer detection, the treatment of high risk cutaneous tumors, their
removal and facial reconstruction. He also maintains an active interest in the utility of photodynamic therapy and
its various uses, as well as the immunohistochemistry of both benign and malignant skin lesions.
When not at work, Dr Mendese enjoys anything outdoors and spending time with his wife and five kids.
